There is a solution to our problem based on our thinking, as in reality, the only problem we have is how we’re thinking about the problem.

Personal Coaching is a minefield of charlatans and incompetence so much so that I am almost inclined not to include it as an offering here.

However, that wouldn’t solve the problems I see within the industry. I have given many talks on this over the years, enquiring about a minimum standard of capability for coaches, and the removal of weekend courses by large organisations that qualify no one for anything useful.

Coaching is not a process. It cannot be reduced to a set of coping strategies that a 12 year old could follow given a flow chart of personal issues for a client.

Instead, it requires a nuanced way of listening to a client’s issues with a more Dynamic and Constructed Awareness in the moment. For this to happen, the coach must be a level or so above the client in order to see their habituated patterns and lack of balance in their construction of self.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at how you think about your thinking:

When you think about your thinking right now, how are you constructing “you”?

What is your intention? How Aware are you of your Intention in the moment? Does this Awareness offer you Choices in your Responses in the moment, or are you simply acting out of habit?

The way Constructed Developmental Coaching works is to profile your thinking in order to determine how you construct “you” via 50 Cognitive Intentions, in order to discover your level of self-awareness, which is to say, your level of Choice in your thinking and behaving. It looks something like the next image.

Once we have the fifty Cognitive Intentions mapped out and your Thinking Style is apparent, we can begin to look at those CI’s that are the most unconscious (or least conscious) in order to intervene in their conscious use, which will bring balance to your thinking. This is all based on Constructed Development Theory by Stevens (2020).

The profile will give us a score on the Thinking Quotient scale, which is the actual measure of your self-awareness. It tells us so much more than other psychometrics, which is why it is the perfect basis for a coaching conversation.

The real differentiator between Constructed Developmental Coaching and those coaches who do not use this method is their level of Intention, Awareness, Choice and Response in the moment. We offer a solution to your problem based on your thinking, as in reality, the only problem we have is how we’re thinking about the problem.

Let’s change your behaviour to match your more self-aware thinking!
