However, that wouldn’t solve the problems we see within the industry. Dr Stevens has given many talks on this over the years, enquiring about a minimum standard of capability for coaches (via the TQ), and the removal of weekend courses by large organisations that qualify no one at all other than in their own minds.
Coaching is not a process such as GROW. This simply gives the false impression that anyone can coach if they have a format. It cannot be reduced to a set of coping strategies that a 12 year old could follow given a flow chart of personal issues.
Instead, it requires a nuanced way of listening to a client’s issues with a more Dynamic and Constructed Awareness in the moment. For this to happen, the coach must be a level or so above the client in order to see their habituated patterns and lack of balance in their construction of self.
